Is Oaxaca Safe?
Yes! Oaxaca is considered to be a very safe, walkable, & vibrant city!
The historic city center of Oaxaca is very safe. Of course, we encourage you to be aware of your surroundings at all times. Use licensed tour operators on your excursions, which can be coordinated through TripAdvisor or your hotel concierge.
Walk with a loved one at night, watch your belongings (normal city mentality behavior).
What is the Currency?
Mexican pesos are used in Oaxaca. Consider obtaining some from your bank (usually free of charge) prior to your trip. The exchange rate changes daily. However, the peso usually hovers around 1/20 of a dollar.
Any language tips?
You can easily communicate in English within most Oaxacan hotels, museums, and cafes, restaurants. Expect that most people will not understand or speak English perfectly. We recommend bringing a simple Spanish phrasebook or downloading the Google Translate app on your phone.
What will the weather be like?
October is technically considered to be part of Oaxaca's “rainy season.” Highs of 80s, lows of 60s. Pack layers and bring a light jacket/shaw for the evening.
How do I get to Centro Historico?
You can purchase a taxi ticket at the airport or arrange a private driving service. Please review our transportation page for additional information.
Is there Uber?
No, there is not uber. Once you are in the city center, everything is walkable, so no need.
Is it safe to drink the water?
Like all regions in Mexico, we advise you to drink bottled water only. If you have a sensitive stomach, consider brushing your teeth with bottled water.
All ice in purchased drinks/cocktails/etc., is bought (filtered water), it is safe to consume.
What if I get sick?
Pack Immodium and Pepto, and begin taking Imodium immediately if you have an upset stomach, don’t wait.
Dietary Advice
Give yourself some time to adjust to new spices/flavors, see how it goes with one meal, etc.,
Electrolit is a great Gatorade-like drink that gives you all your electrolytes!. Drink lots of water, it is hot and you will be walking around.
